Preview: Chiefs vs. Broncos

November 13th, 2010 by xavier taylor No comments »

The Chiefs have to face another division rival.  Last week, they played in Oakland, and now they’re in Denver.Last week’s game was tough for me to watch, and I can only imagine how tough it was for the Chiefs to come away from a game like that with nothing to show for it.  today, I’ll give some keys and predict the winner.

Keys For the Chiefs

In my opinion, they’ve simply got to forget the previous game.  They’re probably still fuming, but the last thing they need is another game with 26 penalties.  What the Chiefs really need to do, in my opinion, is come out of the gate running.  Start the game with a vengeance.  But, when I say vengeance, I don’t mean get real angry and cause a bunch of penalties.  If they do that, there’s no way they stand a chance.

Keys for the Broncos

the Broncos, in my opinion, have to attack the Cheifs early.  If they can even dominate the first quarter, it could deflate the confidence of the Chiefs for the rest of the game.  Or, even if they can make it close through the first half, it’s likely that the Chiefs would get frustrated and take some stupid penalties. That’s when Denver could really pull away.

The Final verdict

I’m predicting that the Broncos will upset the Chiefs. I see the Chiefs losing discipline and really allowing Denver to win.  The standings may say otherwise, but I like Denver in this one.

The Woes of the New Jersey Devils

November 11th, 2010 by xavier taylor No comments »

Right now, I feel bad for the New Jersey Devils, which is mostly why I wrote this post.  They suffered another home loss last night, although it went to a shootout.  But, that also made it a whole lot more painful.  Kovalchuck was the final shooter, and it was tied 1-1 in the shootout.  as he went in, he lost the puck and never got a shot away. here’s a video if you want to take a look.  To me, it perfectly encapsulates the Devil’s season so far.  They’ve had close games, and at certain times victory was within their grasp.  But, it seems to me like they just can’t finish it off.  You can say all you want about how they got one point, but getting one point won’t get them back on track.

How Bad Are They?

To answer the question above, they’re really bad.  They’re tied for being dead last in the entire league, along with Edmonton and the New York Islanders.  They’ve scored the least amount of goals so far this year, and they’ve allowed the second most.  Their goals for to goals against is also the worst of anyone, sitting at -24.  They haven’t won a game yet at home, even though they’ve had seven chances to do it.  All of these numbers combine for one really bad team.

How Can You Fix It?

In my opinion, something big has to change.  I don’t think even getting rid of the coach is enough.  Maybe a new owner or general manager.  They need a big change:  they’ve got to wipe the slate clean and start afresh.  Kovalchuck, in my opinion, really isn’t the problem.  Even if they can turn it around with the current personnel, what’ll stop them from floundering in the first round?  They might be able to make it to the playoffs, but if they want to go deep, they’ve got to make deep changes.

Preview: Flames vs. Avalanche

November 9th, 2010 by xavier taylor No comments »

Tonight, the Calgary Flames face the Colorado Avalanche in a hotly contested rivalry.  Colorado is finishing a four-game road trip, while the Flames are beginning a three-game road trip.  We’ll break down some keys for both teams and predict the winner.

Keys for Calgary

Calgary needs to play a full sixty minute hockey game.  It irritates me so much when Calgary plays great for the first period, but then everything completely falls apart in the second and third periods.  If they can carry over their first period play into the rest of the game, they’ll stand a good chance of winning.  Also, they have to be disciplined.  They can’t let their recent losses force them to make stupid mistakes.  If they can’t control their emotins, I don’t think they can stand a chance.

Keys For Colorado

Colorado is really hurting, with their goalie Craig Anderson being the biggest loss, in my humble opinion.  I think that they need to follow the gameplan that they did in the first meeting of these two teams on October 28. They won the game 6-5, but the most imprtant thing in that game was that they kept on competing.  Especially when you consider Calgary’s play of late, Colorado needs to keep on competing.  Even if they get down a few goals, they’ve got to press in and hope for the best.

Final Prediction

Well, as much as I don’t want to say this, I think Colorado is going to win.  In this writer’s opinion, it’ll be a one or two goal game at the most.  I’m going with Colorado mostly because of Calgary’s deficiencies, not Colorado’s superiorities.  Calgary just doesn’t seem like they’re able to pull it together right now.

Chiefs vs. Raiders: Who Will win?

November 6th, 2010 by xavier taylor No comments »

This Sunday, The Cheifs and Raiders face off in a heated divisional rivalry. The explosive Oaklnad running attack meets the stone wall Kansas City defense.  Who wins? In this post, I’ll make a case for both teams and then give a prediction of my own.

Why the Chiefs Could Win

One main reason is that they have a load of confidence right now.  Kansas City hasn’t done this well since 2003, so they know they can win and they think they’ve got something that might propel them deep into the playoffs.  Rebardless, they’re playing well.  even though last week’s victory maybe shouldn’t have been so close, they still found a way to win.  also, the Cheifs have been stingy on the run, and they’ll need that against Oaklnd running backs that have absolutely torn it up this year.  And, statistics favor the Cheifs too.  The last seven times these two teams have played each other, Kansas City has been the victor.

Why the Raiders Could Win

The Raiders, although they’re 4-4, have absolutely smashed their past two opponents to peices.  A 59-14 victory over Denver followed up by a 33-3 whopping over Seattle.  This, in my opinion, shows that Oakland also has too have a ton of cofidence.  How could you not after beating up your last two opponents?  Not only that, Oakland does have a potent running game.  as mentioned before, K.C.’s defence is pretty stingy.  something has to give: either Oakland’s superb running backs will roll over K.C., or Kansas City’s stellar defence will manfully stand up to Oakland.  For me, only time can tell which one will happen.

The Final Verdict

This is tough, since it’s two teams coming in, both of them having a ton of confidence.  but, in my opinion, I think Kansas City is going to win.  the thing that does it for me is that Kansas City has won its past seven games in Oakland.  The Chiefs now seem to be immune to Oaklnad’s ferocious fanbase, which I dare say is one of Oakland’s most powerful weapons.  One thing I’m sure of is that it’ll be a mighty close game.

What’s Up With the Flames?

November 4th, 2010 by xavier taylor No comments »
Mikka Kippursoff made 30 saves on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough.

Another lead, but another blown lead as well. Another close game, but another loss as well.  have you been seeing a pattern lately with the Flames? I have, and it makes me mad.  Being from Calgary, I’m a natural Flames fan.  But, seeing games like those in the past two weeks makes me want to forget about the Flames altogether and find a better team.  if the flames are going to do better, they’re going to have to hold onto their leads.  Part of me, as outrageous as it seems, wants to have the Flames purposely fall behind so that they can’t give up a lead.  You have to have a lead if you’re going to give it up, right?  here’s a few of my own suggestions for how to improve the Flames, especially in later parts of the game.

Don’t Back Off

The biggest key for the Flames, in my humble opinion, is to never back down.  I don’t care how big of a lead the Flames have: they can’t back down.  It seems to me that, in their last three or so games, the flames have simply gotten their lead and then gone back into their shell, hoping the opposition doesn’t score.  It sounds harsh, but why in the world would anyone go back into their shell by the second period and expect to beat the Washington Capitals? It really doesn’t work like that.  If the Flames are going to win, I think it will come when they keep their first period mentality for the entire game.

Where’s the Leader?

Jarome Iginla’s got to step it up.  I know it’s obvious and everyone else is saying it too, but I agree.  Jarome has always been the kind of guy that leads mostly by example.  I loved it when he dropped the gloves with Brad Stuart-although the referees broke it up before they could fight-  but still, there comes a point where he’s simply got to be playing better.  Brent Sutter can call out te team for a “dumb game”, but Iginla has to take some initiative.  That’s how I think the Flames could fix themselves up and become a force to be reckoned with.
